Pianist Ruth McGinley explores the music of Philip Glass and the jazz of Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans in a recital at Queen's University Belfast.
Ruth McGinley plays the Harty Room at Queen's University Belfast on Sunday 1 November, as part of the Belfast International Arts Festival. It's a solo piano recital that runs for an hour and fifteen minutes, starting at 3:00pm.
The programme is built around the hypnotic, repetitive sound world of Philip Glass, which McGinley pairs with the more lyrical, jazz-inflected writing of Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans. She works through Metamorphosis, selected Études, and music from Glassworks and Mishima before opening into the jazz poetry of Jarrett and Evans, with the set culminating in Evans's Peace Piece. It's a wide stretch of ground to cover in one afternoon, moving from the structured, circling patterns of Glass to the more open, improvisatory feel of the jazz side.
McGinley is an Arts Council NI Major Individual Artist Award recipient, and she's built her reputation on a style that draws from classical, folk, jazz, electronic and film music. She's known for an expressive, deeply personal approach, and this programme lets that come through across two very different traditions. The Harty Room, in the Music building at Queen's, is a performance space with a hammer-beam vaulted roof and a warm acoustic that seats 120; it hosts the venue's regular lunchtime recitals and evening concerts and serves as the main rehearsal space for the university's choirs and orchestras.
