Workshop in which Paddy Breathnach shares the directing insights behind hit TV shows and award-winning movies with young filmmakers.
Paddy Breathnach is running a directing workshop at the Peter Froggatt Centre at Queen's University on Saturday 24 October, and it's open to anyone aged 16 to 25. It's a two-hour session, starting at 14:00, so it's a Saturday afternoon thing rather than a whole day.
Breathnach is a good name to have leading it. He started out in natural history documentaries after studying philosophy at UCD, and his debut, Ailsa, won awards. From there he moved into comedy drama with I Went Down, and went on to direct Blow Dry, Man About Dog, and the horror film Shrooms. His 2017 feature Viva was Ireland's submission for the Academy Awards, and Rosie earned him an IFTA for Best Director.
He's worked across a fair bit of ground since then. His TV credits include directing for Vikings and The Dry, as well as the season finale of Netflix's Bodkin. He's also produced the Sundance-selected documentary SouthPaw and The Mighty Celt. That range—from natural history and horror to high-end TV and award-winning features—is exactly what he'll be drawing on here. The workshop is built around the directing insights behind hit TV shows and award-winning movies, so it's less about the theory and more about how things actually get made.
