A collaborative concert in which Pauline Scanlon and the Galway folk band The Whileaways interpret the songs of Leonard Cohen.
Pauline Scanlon and the Galway band The Whileaways bring Bird on the Wire: The Songs of Leonard Cohen to the Grand Opera House on Thursday 18 March 2027. It's a collaborative concert interpreting Cohen's songbook, with Scanlon and The Whileaways putting their own readings to his music and words. The show is billed as emotionally charged and aimed at Cohen fans and folk fans in equal measure.
Scanlon first made her mark on the Irish music scene with her debut album Red Colour Sun more than a decade ago, and she's worked both as a solo artist and as part of the vocal duo LUMIERE. The Whileaways, fronted by Noelie McDonnell, Noriana Kennedy and Nicola Joyce, have released three critically acclaimed albums, toured the world and picked up nominations for Best Group and Best Album at the RTĆ Folk Awards. Together they're taking on Cohen's writing, with the two acts sharing the lead on a set drawn from his songbook.
They won't be alone on stage. The band is rounded out by Will Merrigan on bass, Dave Clancy on keys, Matthew Berrill on saxophone and Eamon Murray on drums, with string arrangements added to the mix. The full line-up is Pauline Scanlon, The Whileaways, Merrigan, Clancy, Berrill and Murray, plus the strings. If you're coming with someone, there's a pre-show Deli Platter for Two available in the Upper Circle Bar.
