Live dancehall music night with Matt Mouton and Weldon Henson at the historic Broken Spoke venue.
Weldon Henson and Matt Mouton are playing the Broken Spoke on Tuesday, September 22, part of the venue's regular Tuesday night double bill. It's a two-act evening: Mouton takes the early slot from 6 to 8 PM, and Henson follows with a dancehall set starting at 8:15 PM. If you're planning to dance, the dancehall opens at 7:15 PM, so you can get your footing before Henson kicks off.
The Broken Spoke is a South Austin landmark, opened in 1964 by James M. White. It's known as the 'Last of the True Texas Dancehalls,' and that's a fair description of what you'll find there: a live music venue that serves homestyle meals, including its famous chicken fried steak, and has built its following on a mix of two-step dancing and dinner-and-show nights in the restaurant. The Tuesday night pairing of Mouton and Henson is just one part of what happens here throughout the week.
Beyond the Tuesday double bill, the Spoke keeps the floor moving with two-step dance lessons from Wednesday to Saturday, 8 to 9 PM, taught by Terri White. And if you're more of a diner than a dancer, the restaurant hosts dinner-and-show nights Tuesday through Saturday, 6 to 8 PM, with no cover. Between the lessons and the dinner shows, there's plenty of reason to swing by more than once.
