Weldon Henson and Brian Winfeld are taking over the Broken Spoke this Tuesday, July 21, for another night of dancehall. It's part of the venue's regular Tuesday night tradition: Brian Winfeld opens from 6 PM to 8 PM, and Weldon Henson takes over at 8 PM for the dancehall set. Both musicians hail from Humble, Texas, so there's a shared Texas root behind the two stages.
If you've never been, the Broken Spoke is one of those Austin landmarks that still feels like a real Texas dancehall. It opened in 1964, when James M. White started it as a place for country acts to play for tips, and it's kept that same spirit ever since. They serve homestyle meals, with their chicken fried steak being the one everyone talks about, and the dance floor is the center of the whole thing.
Tuesday night is built around that floor. At 8:15 PM, just after Henson starts, there are two-step lessons for anyone who wants to get their footing before the night really kicks in. If you're already comfortable, you can just dance. If you're not, the lessons give you a way to join in without feeling like you're in the way.

The lessons cost $10. Beyond that, the dancehall is open for the night. The Spoke also runs two-step lessons Wednesday through Saturday from 8 PM to 9 PM, with the dancehall opening at 7:15 PM on those nights, so Tuesday is just one part of what they do throughout the week. For this one, it's Winfeld from 6 PM, Henson from 8 PM, and lessons at 8:15 PM, all at 3201 S. Lamar Blvd.
