A monthly slow-motion spectacle where attendees race turtles with cold beers and a live DJ, held on the first, second and third Thursdays of every month.
Turtle Racing is back at Little Woodrow's Southpark Meadows tonight, Thursday, October 1, starting at 7 PM. It's one of those South Austin things that's hard to explain until you're actually there: a room full of cold beers, a loud crowd, and a fair amount of patio chaos, all built around the slowest race in town.
The format is as simple as it gets. When you arrive, you grab a turtle card and pick your favorite turtle to root for. From there, you settle in with a drink and wait for the rounds to start. The race itself is just what it sounds like—turtles crossing a finish line—and the crowd treats it with the same intensity as a championship game. Between the heats, a live DJ keeps the energy up, and sponsors rotate each session, so the vibe shifts a bit from night to night.
It's not a one-off, either. Race nights run on the first, second, and third Thursday of every month, so if you miss tonight, there are plenty more chances to get in on it. The current season kicked off back on March 5, 2026, and it's been rolling through the spring and summer, making this one of the more consistent things to do on a Thursday night in South Austin. If you're looking for something low-stakes and high-energy, it's a good spot to spend an evening.
