A hands-on educational walk where participants learn to identify native tree species and how to ethically collect seeds for conservation.
TreeFolks and Central Texas Seed Savers are leading a Tree ID Walk at Zilker Botanical Garden on Saturday, June 13, from 9 AM to 11 AM. It's a hands-on lesson for anyone curious about the trees in their own yard or eager to pick up a new skill, and it's open to anyone regardless of experience.
The walk does two things at once. First, you'll learn to identify native species, the kind of trees that belong in our part of Texas. Second, you'll learn how to safely and ethically collect seeds to donate to TreeFolks' Seeds to Trees Native Nursery, which grows the next generation of native trees across Central Texas. If you've ever looked at a tree in your neighborhood and wondered what it was, this is a good place to start.
Two local groups are behind it. Central Texas Seed Savers is a growing network dedicated to preventing the extinction of ecologically and culinarily important plants in the region. TreeFolks is Austin's urban forestry non-profit, founded in 1989, which has since expanded its work with communities throughout Central Texas in tree planting, tree giveaways, education, and urban-wildland reforestation. Together they're running this as a practical session rather than a lecture.
