Tomahawk performs with the Melvins at Emo's in Austin as part of their 'A Huge Waste of Your Time and Money' tour.
Tomahawk and the Melvins are playing Emo's on Monday, July 20, as part of their A Huge Waste of Your Time and Money tour. It's a double bill that brings together two bands with a long history of crossing paths. They toured together back in 2003, so this is a reunion of sorts for the two on the same stage.
Tomahawk is a supergroup with a deep bench. Mike Patton, the voice of Faith No More and Mr. Bungle, fronts the band alongside Duane Denison, who came from the Jesus Lizard; John Stanier, of Helmet and Battles; and Trevor Dunn, who has played in both Mr. Bungle and the Melvins. Their most recent record, Tonic Immobility, came out in 2021 and was their first album in eight years, so there's a fair bit of newer material to work from.
The Melvins are performing as a four-piece with two drummers. Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover, and Steven McDonald are joined by drummer Coady Willis, meaning the rhythm section is doubled up for the set. Between the two bands, you've got a lot of the same names popping up in different combinations—Trevor Dunn is the most direct link, having played in both.
