Concert by the hardcore punk and crossover thrash band D.R.I. at the Come and Take It Live venue in Austin.
D.R.I. play Come and Take It Live on Wednesday, December 2, at 7 PM. The band is Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, a Houston hardcore punk, thrashcore and crossover thrash outfit that's been around since 1982.
They started out in Texas, formed by Spike Cassidy, Kurt Brecht, Eric Brecht and Dennis Johnson. They never really broke into the mainstream, but their sound—hardcore punk mixed with thrash metal—became a catalyst for bands like Suicidal Tendencies, Corrosion of Conformity and Stormtroopers of Death. Along with those names, they're considered pioneers of crossover thrash, a subgenre that took its name from their 1987 album Crossover.
That crossover sound is exactly what they're known for: the speed and aggression of hardcore punk meeting the riffs and structure of thrash metal. It's a bridge between two scenes that didn't always sit together, and they were one of the first to make it work. The current lineup keeps two founding members, Kurt Brecht and Spike Cassidy, with bassist Harald Oimoen and drummer Walter Ryan filling out the rest.
