Live music session with Theo Lawrence at C-Boy's Heart & Soul, a venue in South Congress.
Theo Lawrence plays C-Boy's Heart & Soul on Monday, August 3, and he's back a week later on Monday, August 10. Both shows start at 6:30 PM, so if you miss the first one, you've got a second chance right around the corner.
Lawrence is a French-Canadian artist from Gentilly, just south of the 13th arrondissement in Paris. He grew up listening to a wide range of styles, and shades of soul, rock and roll, and gospel inform the music he's keen not to pigeonhole into a single genre. He describes his own work as bringing a taste of the American South to his native country, which makes it a fitting thing to hear in a town that takes its soul and roots music seriously.
The venue is C-Boy's Heart & Soul, 2008 S. Congress, at the corner of South Congress and South First. It's billed as the swankiest club in SoCo, and it's got a bit of local history behind it: Continental Club owner Steve Wertheimer dedicated the place to C-Boy Parks, who ran the now-defunct Rome Inn. It opened on New Year's Eve 2013 and still hosts Dale Watson's Chicken Shit Bingo on the back patio on Sundays, while the upstairs bar recedes from the downstairs in a room modeled after its sister venue just down the street.
