Live 80s and 90s new wave tribute music with The Spazmatics at the Speakeasy venue.
The Spazmatics are back at Speakeasy on Wednesday, September 2, as part of the venue's weekly '80s jamz' night. They've been an Austin tradition since 2004, and they're still doing the same thing they started with: playing the best—and sometimes the worst—of 1980s new wave. The four-member group bills itself as 'The Ultimate 80's & 90's Tribute Band' and 'The Ultimate New Wave 80's Band,' and the set stays right in that pocket.
It's as much about the look as the music. They take the stage in period costume—suspenders, a pin-wheel hat, a helmet, and a neck brace—and they're accompanied by an emotional-support chicken. The choreography is charmingly bad, and the jokes are meant to make the audience laugh, so it's a show that doesn't take itself too seriously. If you're in the mood for a night of synth-pop and new wave with a heavy side of camp, this is exactly that.
