The Point and Barfield, The Tyrant play The Continental Club on Friday, September 11. It's a double bill of Austin acts, with The Point taking the main slot and Barfield, The Tyrant opening the night.
The Point are an Austin trio that blend psychedelia, Saharan guitar music, and cumbia, all held together by jam-band sensibilities. Their latest album, Maldito Animal (Deluxe Edition), got a review in Glide Magazine, so there's a recent record to get your bearings with before the show. If you're not familiar with the Saharan guitar side of things, think of the desert blues coming out of Mali and Niger—hypnotic, rhythmic guitar lines that lean into the groove rather than the chorus. Toss in cumbia's danceable pulse and a psychedelic streak, and you've got a good sense of where they're pulling from.
Opening the bill are Barfield, The Tyrant, another Austin act. They describe their sound as funky garage-soul, which puts them in a different gear than The Point—more on the soul and garage side of things, with a focus on the funk. Between the two, you've got a night that moves from garage-soul into a mix of Saharan guitar and cumbia, so it's a fair bit of ground to cover in one evening.

Doors open at 9 PM, and the music starts at 10 PM. The show is 21+ only, and there are no advance tickets, so you'll pay the $15 cover at the door. The Continental Club is at 1315 S. Congress Ave.
