Video karaoke show featuring punk and indie rock classics with onscreen lyrics, a stage, and a 'Sing The Unsung' challenge.
The Karaoke Underground is back at Knomad Bar on Saturday, October 3, from 8 PM to 1 AM. It's a video karaoke night with a stage and on-screen lyrics, and the song list is built around punk and indie rock classics rather than the usual pop hits. If you're more at home with a distorted guitar than a dance floor, this is the one to keep on your radar.
The catalog is huge—more than 1,000 songs to pick from—and there are a couple of specific things that set it apart from a standard karaoke night. There's a 'sad songs only' list with 515 titles for when you're in the mood to lean into the melancholy. Then there's the 'Sing The Unsung' challenge: the first person to cover a song that hasn't been sung since the show started tracking in 2014 gets rewarded. It turns the song selection into a bit of a game, and it's a good excuse to dig into the deeper cuts instead of sticking to the obvious choices.
The night is run by The Karaoke Underground, an Austin-based video karaoke show that's been going since 2004. The founders also started Karaoke Apocalypse, and they've built the whole thing around the underground rock favorites that shaped them. It's a long-running Austin project, and it's played in other cities too—Chicago, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle—and has been featured in The Village Voice, Noisey, Consequence of Sound and Buzzfeed.
