Texas Performing Arts presents Disney's Newsies the Musical, based on the 1899 Newsboys Strike, with music by Alan Menken.
Summer Stock Austin brings Newsies: The Musical to the McCullough Theatre from Friday, July 31 through Sunday, August 9. It's presented by Texas Performing Arts, and the whole run fits into a little over a week, so you've got a few different dates to choose from if you're planning a trip to the theater that summer.
The show is based on the true story of the 1899 Newsboys Strike, when a group of young newsies in New York City went on strike against the powerful newspaper publishers who controlled their livelihoods. It's a story about young people discovering the power they hold when they stand together, and it's built around the idea that tomorrow can be changed by those brave enough to seize the day. The production is recommended for ages 8 and up, so it works as a family outing as much as a night out for adults.
On the creative side, the music is by Alan Menken, with lyrics by Jack Feldman and a book by Harvey Fierstein. The musical itself is based on the Disney film written by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White, and it was originally produced on Broadway by Disney Theatrical Productions. Menken's score is a big part of the experience, and the show is described as having soaring music, explosive choreography, and high energy—the kind of production that leans into its dance numbers. The core of it is a celebration of resilience, community, and the belief that things can get better if you're willing to fight for them.
