If you're not familiar with the name, the story behind it is a good one. Sam got his start in Memphis, competing in singing contests and singing in the church choir. He grew up in the same neighborhood as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, B.B. King, Albert King, and Al Green—a heavy list of names to have as neighbors. He eventually sang with the Bar-Kays and was offered a recording contract with Stax Records, a deal that fell through when he moved to Alaska. He returned to rhythm and blues in 1999, put together a band, and started opening for James Brown, Buckwheat Zydeco, and Gladys Knight.
He'll be playing at The Continental Club, which opened in 1957 and was taken over some thirty years later by Steve Wertheimer. Since then, it's been a home for touring and local Americana, rockabilly, and swing music in the area. Its regular nights include Tuesday happy hours that mix sultry jazz, country, and blues, and a Monday honky-tonk night featuring homegrown act Dale Watson. Soul Man Sam fits right into that tradition.
