Austin bands Caravan Strange and Cilantro Boombox perform live at Radio/East.
Caravan Strange and Cilantro Boombox play Radio/East on Saturday, July 18. Both are Austin bands, and they're sharing the bill on a Saturday night in East Austin.
Caravan Strange is an Egyptian psychedelic funk quartet co-founded by guitarist and composer Moe Diab. He grew up in Cairo, and that background is where the band gets its North African sounds, which he works into their bilingual, cross-continental formulas. It's a specific kind of groove that pulls from the Middle East and lands right here in Austin.
Cilantro Boombox brings a different energy to the same stage. They describe their sound as an explosive mix of Latin, Pan-African, brass band, and electronic musics, and they talk about a positive vibe that flows from the dance floor to the soul. Between the two of them, the night covers a lot of ground—Egyptian psychedelic funk on one end and a brass-heavy, dance-floor blend on the other.
