The Parker House Band plays Parker Jazz Club on Tuesday, August 18, at 7:30 PM. They're working through some of the most influential American popular songs and jazz standards of the early 20th century, with improvisation at the heart of every arrangement. It's a set built on the Great American Songbook, the kind of material that's been a staple of the jazz tradition for decades.
The group is fronted by owner and musician Kris Kimura, whom Jeff Kashiwa dubbed the 'Woodwind Samurai.' He handles the clarinets, flutes, and saxophones, and throws in a little ukulele, trumpet, and flugelhorn along the way, all alongside his vocals. The rest of the band is rounded out by pianist Ryan Davis, bassist Ben Triesch, and drummer Jeremy Bruch. Guest musicians sit in frequently, so no two shows ever end up the same.
The room itself fits the mood: soft candlelight, moody lighting, and every seat facing the center stage. All proceeds from the shows benefit the local nonprofit Texas Jazz Society, and the performances are available via livestream if you can't make it in person. The club is 21+.
