A night of music featuring OndaStereo, a tribute to Soda Stereo, and Easy Compadre!, a funk and dance band, at Sahara Lounge in East Austin.
OndaStereo and Easy Compadre! are playing Sahara Lounge on Friday, August 14, for a double bill that starts with a tribute to Latin rock and ends with instrumental grooves. Both bands are from Austin, and they're splitting the night between two distinct sets.
OndaStereo opens the evening with a full tribute to Soda Stereo, the Argentine trio that dominated Latin rock in the 80s and 90s. They're playing more than 30 of the group's greatest hits, so it's a long set that covers a good stretch of the band's catalog rather than just a handful of the most famous tracks. If you grew up with Soda Stereo, you'll recognize a lot of the songs they're working through.
Easy Compadre! takes over later in the night. Their sound is guitar-driven instrumental music layered with synthesizers and percussion-led dance grooves, so it's a shift from the song-focused tribute that opens the bill. Between the two, the night moves from a tribute to a well-known band into a more open-ended, groove-heavy set.

Sahara Lounge is a laid-back music dive in East Austin that opened in 2011 when the BYO-liquor roadhouse T.C.'s Lounge retired. It kept much of the old building, adopted a vaguely African theme, and fenced in a back patio, while holding onto the big unpaved parking lot and the tiny corner stage. With a capacity of 150, it books rock, funk, Afro-jazz, hip-hop, country, Brazilian, and garage rock seven nights a week.
Doors open at 8 PM, with OndaStereo starting at 8:30 PM and Easy Compadre! following at 11:30 PM. The whole thing runs until 1:30 AM. Tickets are $12 cash or $14 by card.
