Opening night screening of the documentary Muganga, The One Who Treats, with a post-screening reception, part of the Pan African Film Festival.
AFS Cinema kicks off its Pan African Film Festival series on Thursday, July 30, with a screening of Muganga, The One Who Treats. It's the opening night film, and there's a reception following the screening, so it's more of an evening than just a movie. The film itself runs an hour and 45 minutes, in French, Swahili, and Lingala with English subtitles.
Muganga is based on the true story of Dr. Denis Mukwege, the Congolese doctor and Nobel Peace Prize laureate who spent years treating thousands of women who had survived sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The film focuses on his encounter with Belgian surgeon Guy Cadière, and it took home the Ja'Net DuBois Founders Award for Best Feature Narrative at the main festival earlier this year. It's directed by Marie-Hélène Roux and stars Isaach De Bankolé, Vincent Macaigne, Manon Bresch, Babetida Sadjo, and Déborah Lukumuena.
That award is named for Ja'Net DuBois, one of the people who started the Pan African Film Festival back in 1992 along with Danny Glover and Ayuko Babu. The festival is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to promoting Black stories and images through film, visual art, and creative expression, and it's grown into the largest Black film and arts festival in the United States. The 2026 series in Austin brings a selection of acclaimed films from the LA-based festival to the city.
