Chamber music concert with the Marmen Quartet and pianist Anna Petrova, featuring Debussy, Ligeti and Franck.
The Marmen Quartet plays The Mansion on Saturday, May 15, at 7:30 PM. They're joined by pianist Anna Petrova, and the program brings together Debussy, Ligeti and Franck — three composers from very different eras and traditions sharing one bill. It's a chamber music night, and the quartet is the main draw.
If you haven't come across them before, the Marmen Quartet won first prize at both the Bordeaux and Banff International String Quartet Competitions, and they've been described as one of the most impressive young chamber ensembles in the world. That's a lot of praise to live up to, but the pedigree is there.
The concert is presented by ATX Chamber Music and Jazz, a local non-profit run by co-artistic directors Geoffrey Herd and Anna Petrova. They curate shows at venues across Austin and run their own chamber music collective, Ensemble ATX. Accessibility is a big part of what they do: ten percent of the seating at each concert is donated to children and their chaperones, and their artists regularly perform for free in schools, youth clubs and retirement homes through the 'Everyone Deserves Art' initiative, which brings musicians to Title I schools and distributes around 800 student tickets. They also partner musicians with local restaurants, galleries and cultural organizations.
