Sir Stephen Hough, pianist, writer and composer, performs chamber music with Ensemble ATX, culminating in a performance of his own Piano Quintet.
Sir Stephen Hough is coming back to Austin for a two-night stand at The Mansion (Tex-Fed) on February 19 and 20, 2027. He's performing with Ensemble ATX, and the two nights are set up as separate experiences: Friday, February 19, is a solo piano recital, and Saturday, February 20, is the chamber music program with the ensemble. The Saturday show runs from 7:30 to 9:30 PM.
On Saturday, Hough shares the stage with violinists Alexander Sitkovetsky and Geoffrey Herd and cellist Clive Greensmith. The program builds toward a performance of Hough's own Piano Quintet, so you'll hear him as both the pianist and the composer in the same room. It's a good way to see two sides of his work in one evening.
If you're not familiar with him, Hough is a pianist, composer, and writer who's spent more than four decades playing with the world's leading orchestras and has recorded over 70 albums for Hyperion Records. He was the first classical performer to receive a MacArthur Fellowship, teaches on the faculty at Juilliard, and was knighted for services to music. The Economist once named him one of Twenty Living Polymaths, which fits given he's as much a writer and composer as he is a performer.

This visit follows his 2025 appearance with ATX Chamber Music and Jazz, and it's part of the organization's fourth season, which they've billed as their most ambitious yet. That season runs from September 12, 2026, to May 15, 2027, and also includes the inaugural ATX Jazz Fest in April 2027. The Hough weekend falls right in the middle of it. The Mansion is at 2312 San Gabriel in Austin, and the Saturday concert runs from 7:30 to 9:30 PM.
