Concert by the world-renowned Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez at ACL Live at The Moody Theater.
Mariachi Sol de México de José Hernández plays ACL Live at The Moody Theater on Tuesday, December 22, at 8 PM. It's a full mariachi ensemble led by José Hernández, a Grammy Award-winning musician, composer, and educator who founded the group.
There's a lot of history behind the name. Hernández is a seven-generation mariachi from Miraflores, Jalisco, and his family has been playing music professionally since the 1700s. He's a multi-instrumentalist who has played trumpet, violin, guitarrón, and vihuela, and he's earned nine Latin Grammy nominations—seven of those with the ensemble. He also founded Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, the first professional all-female mariachi ensemble in the U.S., and directs the mariachi group that plays at L.A. Rams football games.
His work reaches well beyond the traditional mariachi stage. He's shared the stage with the Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Jalisco Symphonies, and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, which premiered his composition Rapsodia para un mariachi. He's collaborated with a wide range of artists—The Beach Boys, Willie Nelson, Selena, Linda Ronstadt, Juan Gabriel, Jose Feliciano, Vicente Fernández, and Luis Miguel—and written music for films including Old Gringo, American Me, Rango, Glory Road, Sea Biscuit, Don Juan de Marco, and Beverly Hills Chihuahua. In 2021, he received the Cesar Chavez Legacy of Service Award.
