Exhibition by larí garcía exploring misogyny and gender-based violence through sculpture and installation, inspired by a visit to a Puerto Rican Spiritualist center.
larí garcía brings Spirit of Discrimination to Women & Their Work this summer, running from July 11 through September 3. The exhibition comes from garcía's visit to La Casa de Las Almas (House of the Souls) in Puerto Rico, a Spiritualist center nearly a century old that once served as a refuge for working-class people and women excluded from the Catholic Church.
While studying transcripts of historical conversations between spirit mediums and the dead, garcía uncovered a deep vein of misogyny and gender-based violence preserved within one of the island's most prominent Spiritualist centers. The work asks how much of that discrimination underpins religious spaces and what happens when those structures break open once discovered. Sculpture and installation give material form to those findings: hollow wall framing, suspended assemblage, and documents presented as poetic linguistic interventions evoke pressure, constraint, and the tension of something about to break through.
garcía works between precarity and loss and has attended residencies at the Core Program MFAH, MASS MoCA, and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. The show is hosted by Women & Their Work, an Austin venue that has fostered women artists for 48 years.

The exhibition opens with a reception on July 11 from 7 PM to 9 PM, and stays on view through September 3 at 1311 East Cesar Chavez Street.
