AFS Cinema is screening La Causa on Sunday, July 26, with a post-film talk to follow. The screening is presented by American Short Fiction, the Austin-based literary nonprofit, in partnership with lit hub Alienated Majesty and the Cine Las Americas festival.
La Causa is a 2020 documentary that takes you inside the Penitenciaría General de Venezuela (PGV), one of the country's most notorious and dangerous locations. It's an infamous gang-run prison, described as a place "where the only guards stand outside." The film focuses on the prisoners' lives and their search for salvation under the penitentiary's own internal justice code, a system they live by when the state has effectively stepped back.
Because it's a documentary about a place so far removed from most of our daily experiences, the post-film talk is a good reason to stick around after the credits roll. It's a chance to hear more about the PGV and the people the film follows, and to talk through what you've just seen with others in the room.
