Gilbert & Sullivan Austin presents Ken Ludwig's musical revue Sullivan & Gilbert, marking its 50th year of performances.
Gilbert & Sullivan Austin is bringing Sullivan & Gilbert to the Austin Playhouse West from October 15 to 18, and it's a big one for them: the production marks the organization's 50th year of performances. They've been putting on shows for Texas audiences since 1976, so this is a bit of a milestone run.
Written by Ken Ludwig, Sullivan & Gilbert is a musical revue set backstage at London's Savoy Theatre in 1890. It follows the partnership of W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan as they scramble to put together a special performance for Queen Victoria. The tension comes from a few places: Sullivan has been missing rehearsals due to illness, his romance with a young singer has Gilbert on edge, and the Queen's son—enthusiastic but not exactly gifted—has joined the company. It's a mix of docudrama, period comedy, and musical revue, and it pulls in more than 15 favorites from their catalog, including numbers from The Mikado, The Pirates of Penzance, and H.M.S. Pinafore.
On stage, Sam Johnson plays W. S. Gilbert, Holton Johnson takes on Sir Arthur Sullivan, and Sarah Manna is Violet Russell. The production is directed by Emily Taylor, with musical direction by Ellie Jarrett Shattles and choreography by Kelly Hasandras. It's a collaboration between Gilbert & Sullivan Austin and Austin Playhouse.
