Johnny McGowan is an Austin-based musician, bandleader, and songwriter who's built a name across the Texas music scene for his energetic showmanship and twangy takes on boot-scootin' classics from the 1950s through the 1970s. His band, the Rugged Gents, has become a mainstay at dancehalls across the Lone Star State, paying homage to country greats like Ernest Tubb, Dave Dudley, and Glen Campbell. The Continental Club is a good fit for it. It opened in 1957 and was taken over more than thirty years later by Steve Wertheimer, who turned it into an Austin anchor for touring and local Americana, rockabilly, and swing.
