A hands-on sewing session for families to create felt Frog and Toad plushies, part of the Austin Public Library's centennial celebrations.
Pleasant Hill Branch is hosting a Homeschool Social on Friday, October 9, where you'll learn how to hand-sew pocket plushies of Frog and Toad. It's a workshop focused on felt, so you'll be working with that soft, sturdy fabric to bring the two characters to life. If you've never sewn by hand before, this is a good place to start—the whole point is to walk through the process and leave with something you actually made.
The session is part of the Austin Public Library's Centennial Celebrations, which mark 100 years of the library serving the community from 1926 to 2026. The library is running a series of events across its branches to celebrate the centenary, and this one fits right in with the hands-on, community-focused side of things. It's a nice way to spend a Friday morning making something tangible while the city marks a century of its public library system.
It's a homeschool social, so it's geared toward families and students who spend their days learning outside the traditional classroom, but the craft itself—hand-sewing felt plushies—is something anyone can get into. You'll be making pocket-sized versions of Frog and Toad, the two unlikely friends from Arnold Lobel's classic stories, so they're small enough to keep with you rather than sitting on a shelf.

The workshop runs from 11 AM to 1 PM at the Pleasant Hill Branch, located at 211 E. William Cannon Dr. in Austin. That's two hours to get your stitching done, so you'll have plenty of time to take your pace and make sure your seams are tight. If you're around on Friday morning and fancy a bit of sewing, it's a low-pressure way to spend a few hours.
