Home Is Where the Art Is Closing Reception

Northern-Southern is hosting the closing reception for Home Is Where the Art Is on Thursday, July 30, from 6 to 8 PM. The gallery is on 5th Street between Brazos and San Jacinto in downtown Austin. It's the final send-off for a multimedia exhibition by five Black artists—Adrian Armstrong, Colby Deal, JaTaiRee Hudson Jr., Charles Louis Middleton III, and Isaac Rowry—whose practices span Austin, Houston, New Orleans, San Antonio, Los Angeles and beyond.

Working across photography, painting, sculpture and mixed media, the exhibition traces the relationships, environments and cultural ecosystems that shape their work. It reflects the lived geographies of Black cultural life in the American South, where moving between cities and states reshapes how home is understood. The show foregrounds artists whose practices reflect both rootedness and mobility, and it's accompanied by a zine that collects interviews with each of them.

The reception itself will have light bites by Chef Martin of Desire Catering, and an after party hosted by Front Row Functions at Thompson Austin immediately following.
