Live music session by the roots rock and rockabilly band Heybale! at The Continental Club, a historic Austin venue.
Heybale! are back at The Continental Club this Sunday, September 6, as part of their long-running residency on South Congress. They've held down the club's Sunday nights since 2000, and the lineup is a familiar one: Tom Lewis on drums, Redd Volkaert on guitar, Earl Poole Ball on piano, Kevin Smith on bass, and Dallas Wayne on rhythm guitar.
If you've never been, the Continental Club is one of Austin's oldest continuously running clubs, having opened in 1955. It started as a swanky supper club, became the city's first burlesque joint, and later a blue-collar bar on South Congress that opened every morning at 7 AM. Between 1983 and 1987, it was a hotbed of new wave, punk, and rock n' roll, with Social Distortion, The Replacements, and The True Believers among its alumni. It was refurbished in 1987 to resemble its original 1950s look, restoring the wall murals that still hang there. Now a historical landmark, it's the premier venue for roots rock, traditional country, blues, rockabilly, and garage rock, and it shares the South Congress strip with The Broken Spoke, a spit-and-sawdust honky tonk that's refused to sell to developers.
