Live music performance by the roots-rock and blues band Heybale! at The Continental Club.
Heybale! are playing The Continental Club on Sunday, August 2. It's a familiar pairing: the band has held down Sunday nights at the club since 2000, drawing a regular crowd of dancers, hipsters, late-nighters, and off-duty musicians.
The lineup for the night is Tom Lewis on drums, Redd Volkaert on guitar, Earl Poole Ball on piano, Kevin Smith on bass, and Dallas Wayne on rhythm guitar. With two guitars and a piano in the mix, the sound leans toward the roots-rock and traditional country the club is known for.
The venue itself is an Austin landmark. It opened in 1955 as a swanky supper club, later became the city's first burlesque club, and then a blue-collar bar on South Congress that opened every morning at 7 AM. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, it was one of the city's premier live music rooms, staging acts like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, Joe Ely, and Bill Carter. A 1987 renovation restored its original 1950s look, and the murals are still on the walls. Since then, it's been a home for roots-rock, traditional country, blues, rockabilly, and garage-rock.
