A kid-friendly STEAM art workshop where children use a laser cutter to create acrylic suncatchers; all materials provided.
Asmbly Makerspace is hosting a free acrylic suncatcher class for kids on Saturday, October 10, from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. It's a STEAM art workshop geared toward children ages 5 to 12, and all the materials are provided, so you don't need to bring anything but the kids.
The project is a good mix of tech and craft. Participants use a laser cutter to cut wood and colorful acrylic pieces, which they then paint and assemble into a suncatcher. It's a nice way for kids to see a piece of machinery actually make something they can hold and take home, and the painting part lets them put their own spin on it. Since it's a STEAM workshop, it hits that sweet spot between art and the more technical side of making.
Asmbly Makerspace is a nonprofit teaching community that makes tools accessible to both adults and children. They've got dedicated spaces for 3D printing, woodworking, metalsmithing, laser cutting, sewing, ceramics, and electronics, so this class is just one small part of what they do. If your kids end up liking the laser cutter, there's plenty more to explore there.
