Frank Cavitt & the Honky-Tonk Doctors are playing Donn's Depot on Wednesday, September 3, as part of a run that keeps them on the Wednesday night bill through September 30. The music starts at 8:30 PM, right after the 7:30 PM dance lesson, so you can learn the steps and then put them to use with a live band.
If you've never been, Donn's Depot is one of the city's real old-school honky-tonks. It's housed in a genuine Missouri-Pacific train depot that was moved to West 5th Street and set up in 1972 by founder Bob Ogden, who added retired railcars to the mix — the women's restroom is inside an actual caboose. Pianist and owner Donn Adelman bought the place in 1978, renamed it Donn's Depot, and still plays there weekly, running it as a family business with his wife Arleen and son Matt. His house band, Donn & The Station Masters, takes the stage on Fridays.
The Wednesday nights are run by Double or Nothing Two-Step, and the lessons teach Austin's own style of swing in the two-step tradition — small-space dancing that evolved to fit the city's dance floors. Those lessons have been named Best Two-Stepping Lessons in the Austin Chronicle's Best of Austin and featured in Texas Monthly, Garden & Gun, Tribeza and Austin Monthly; the instructors have taught more than 50,000 people how to two-step.
