Live music performance by Ethan Azarian and friends at the historic Hole in the Wall venue in Austin.
Ethan Azarian plays Hole in the Wall on Wednesday, September 30, with a lineup billed as Ethan Azarian & Friends. It's a mid-week show in the Campus area, and the "Friends" part of the title suggests a rotating cast of guests rather than a fixed band.
If you haven't spent much time there, Hole in the Wall is one of the oldest rooms still going in Austin. It opened in 1974 as a folkie hangout and a favorite stage for Townes Van Zandt, Nanci Griffith, and Blaze Foley, before it shifted toward the punk, cosmic country, and alternative that launched Timbuk3, Fastball, Spoon, and Shakey Graves. It's a historic two-stage dive with a combined capacity of a couple hundred, and it still stages live music every night. It's long served as a proving ground for new bands, and it's always been a shoestring effort — it briefly shuttered in 2002 and came dangerously close to being priced out in 2015. This year, it was named Readers Poll Dive Bar of 2026.
