Church on Monday w/Elias Haslanger

Church on Monday are back at The Continental Club Gallery this Monday, August 3, as part of their long-running residency. The band is led by tenor saxophonist Elias Haslanger, who fronts the group on the horn. He's joined by Tommy Howard on guitar, Daniel Dufour on drums, Sam Pankey on bass, and Terry Bowness on organ.

If the name sounds familiar, it's because it's one of the city's oldest standing jazz residencies. Haslanger put the group together in the fall of 2011 for his fifth recording as a leader, and the band took its name from an original composition he wrote for that session, which became the title track of the record. That song spent 11 weeks on the JazzWeek charts and picked up positive reviews in Downbeat and Jazz Times, and the momentum from that release is what landed the residency at the Gallery in the first place. Thirteen years later, the song and the recording still give the band its name, and the residency has become a Monday night fixture with fans lining up outside the club.

Since those early days, they've picked up five Austin Music Awards, played ACL Live at The Moody Theater, and toured across Texas. They've released three critically acclaimed recordings along the way, and the whole project is dedicated to the memory and legacy of the late Dr. James Polk.

The set runs from 8:30 to 10 PM, and it's a $10 cover at the door.
