An evening of jazz with the Austin band Church on Monday, led by Elias Haslanger, at The Continental Club Gallery.
Church on Monday, led by Austin jazz artist Elias Haslanger, plays The Continental Club Gallery this Monday, September 14. It's part of their long-running residency at the club, one of the city's oldest and most consistent live-music spots, where fans still line up outside every Monday night.
Haslanger put the group together in the fall of 2011 for his fifth recording as a leader. The band took its name from an original composition he wrote for that session, which became the title track of the record. That release spent 11 weeks on the JazzWeek charts and picked up positive reviews in Downbeat and Jazz Times, and it was on the back of that momentum that Haslanger secured the residency at the Continental Club Gallery. Since then, the group has won five Austin Music Awards, played ACL Live at The Moody Theater, performed across Texas, and appeared in clubs like The Elephant Room and Parker Jazz Club. They've put out three critically acclaimed recordings, and the band plays in memory of the late Dr. James Polk.
