Church on Monday w/Elias Haslanger

Church on Monday are back at The Continental Club Gallery on Monday, August 10, led by tenor saxophonist Elias Haslanger. The band is a five-piece: Haslanger on sax, Tommy Howard on guitar, Daniel Dufour on drums, Sam Pankey on bass, and Terry Bowness on organ. It's a residency that's become a bit of an Austin fixture, with fans lining up outside the club every Monday night.

Haslanger started the group in the fall of 2011 for his fifth recording as a leader, and the band took its name from an original composition he wrote for that session, which became the title track. The record spent 11 weeks on the JazzWeek charts and drew positive reviews in Downbeat and Jazz Times, and that momentum helped Haslanger secure the residency at the Gallery. Thirteen years later, the group has won five Austin Music Awards, played ACL Live at The Moody Theater and across Texas, and released three critically acclaimed recordings. Haslanger's ninth album as a leader, Legacy, arrived in 2024, and the band continues to dedicate its work to the memory and legacy of the late Dr. James Polk.

It's one of the city's longest-running jazz residencies, and the Monday night slot is the one that's kept it going. If you've never been, it's a good place to start with the local scene—the same band, the same room, week after week. The show runs from 8:30 to 10 PM, and tickets are $10.
