Live dancehall music performance by Jeff Hughes and Tracie Lynn at the historic Broken Spoke venue.
CHAPARRAL w/ Jeff Hughes takes over the dancehall at Broken Spoke on Thursday, September 3, with Tracie Lynn opening the evening in the restaurant. It's a double-bill that lets you stretch the night out: Tracie Lynn plays from 6 to 8 PM in the restaurant, and Jeff Hughes takes the dancehall starting at 9 PM.
If you're not familiar with the layout, the Broken Spoke is set up as two distinct spaces. The restaurant is where the homestyle meals happen—their chicken fried steak is the one everyone talks about—and the bands playing there play for tips. The dancehall is the main room, the one with the dance floor and the neon, and that's where the late-night sets go. Coming in early for Tracie Lynn means you can get dinner and a set in before the dancehall kicks off.
Speaking of the dancehall, the Spoke is a place that lives for the two-step. They run lessons Wednesday through Saturday from 8 to 9 PM with instructor Terri White, so if you've been wanting to learn, you can get a lesson in right before the music starts. And if you're a regular, you know about Two-Step Tuesdays with Weldon Henson, which runs every Tuesday at 8:15 PM for a $10 cover.

Founded in 1964 by James M. White, the Spoke calls itself the 'Last of the True Texas Dancehalls,' and it still runs on that old-school model: homestyle food, live music, and a dance floor that stays busy. It's at 3201 S. Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78704. Tracie Lynn starts at 6 PM in the restaurant; Jeff Hughes takes the dancehall at 9 PM.
