Chaparral are back at Broken Spoke on Thursday, July 30, with Jeff Hughes on the bill. It's one of several Thursday nights they're playing this summer—they've also got July 23, August 6, August 20, and August 27 on the calendar, so if you can't make this one, you've got a few more chances coming up.
For those who haven't spent much time there, Broken Spoke is one of those Austin landmarks that's stayed exactly as it was meant to be. It opened in 1964, and James M. White, who started the place, is still there greeting regulars on the dance floor. Over the decades, the room has seen the upper rungs of country music history pass through—Bob Wills, Ernest Tubb, and George Strait, alongside Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. Texas stalwarts like Don Walser, Dale Watson, Kelly Willis, and the Derailers have all played here too.
The formula hasn't changed much since the beginning: homestyle meals led by the famous chicken-fried steak, cold beer, and bands playing for tips. If you're not yet comfortable on the floor, instructor Terri White runs two-step lessons Wednesday through Saturday, 8:30 to 9:30 PM, so you can get your footing before the dancing really kicks off.

On the night, the restaurant is open from 6 to 8 PM, and the music starts at 9 PM. There's no cover charge, so you can just walk in, grab a drink, and settle in for the evening. If you're planning to eat first, the kitchen closes at 8, which gives you plenty of time to finish your meal before the band takes the stage.
