Live dancehall music performance by CHAPARRAL, Jeff Hughes and Tracie Lynn at the historic Broken Spoke venue.
CHAPARRAL is back at the Broken Spoke this Thursday, September 10, as part of a weekly series that runs every Thursday through October 29. It's a night that splits the evening between the restaurant and the dancehall, with two different sets to work your way through.
Tracie Lynn takes the early slot in the restaurant from 6 to 8 PM, so you can get some food in before the dance floor opens up. From there, Jeff Hughes takes over the dancehall at 9 PM. If you're coming for the dancing, that's the set you're after. If you're just in for the music and a meal, the early slot works fine.
The Broken Spoke has been around since 1964, when James M. White opened it. It's known as one of the last true Texas dancehalls, and it still leans into that: homestyle meals—the chicken fried steak is the one people talk about—and a dance floor that's seen generations of Texas two-steppers. If you're not yet comfortable on the floor, they run two-step lessons Wednesday through Saturday from 8 to 9 PM, which puts you right in the window before the dancehall kicks off.

Since CHAPARRAL is a weekly series, this isn't a one-off. It runs every Thursday through October 29, so if you can't make it this week, there's another one next. The Broken Spoke is at 3201 S. Lamar Blvd in Austin. Tracie Lynn plays the restaurant from 6 to 8 PM, and Jeff Hughes takes the dancehall at 9 PM.
