A monthly community walking group that explores the grounds of the MACC, discovering stories, public art and history through a guided stroll.
Casa de la Cultura is hosting Caminata con Calma at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center on Saturday, August 29, from 10 AM to 12 PM. It's a guided community walk around the MACC grounds, and the whole thing is built around the philosophy de poquito a poquito—one step at a time.
The walk is a monthly group rooted in community, movement, and learning. You'll stroll the trail that circles the center's grounds, and along the way, the guides share the stories, public art, and history of the space. It's less of a fast-paced tour and more of a slow wander through the site's layers, so it works as well if you're coming alone as if you're bringing a group.
There's a bit of context that makes the timing feel right. The MACC is dedicated to the preservation, creation, presentation, and promotion of the cultural arts of Mexican Americans and Latino cultures. The building itself only recently reopened to the public on June 6, 2026, following Phase 2 of its 2018 Facility Expansion Plan—a reopening celebrated as Juntos de Nuevo. This walk is one of the ways the center is bringing people back into the space.

Beyond the walk, the MACC keeps a full calendar: free gallery access, cultural-arts classes and camps, the Caminos teen leadership program, and the Latino/a/e Artist Access Program, which gives local artists space to share their work. If you're planning to stick around after the walk, there's plenty to see inside.
Practical details: the session is pet-friendly, and you'll need to RSVP to join. They recommend bringing a reusable water bottle and wearing outdoor walking attire. It runs from 10 AM to 12 PM at 600 River St., Austin, TX 78701.
