A bystander intervention training session led by Right to Be to equip residents with tools to recognise and respond to identity-based harassment, part of the 'We All Belong - Austin Against Hate' initiative.
Right to Be is leading a bystander intervention training session at the Asian American Resource Center (AARC) on Wednesday, September 30, from 3 PM to 5 PM. The workshop is titled Stop Asian Hate! We All Belong, and it's part of the city's broader We All Belong - Austin Against Hate initiative, which partners with community groups to give residents practical tools for recognizing, disrupting, and safely responding to identity-based harassment.
Right to Be runs the session, and they start by looking at how anti-Asian harassment harms communities. From there, they walk through the "5Ds"—a set of five strategies for intervening when you see someone being targeted—alongside other practical ways to respond safely and support the person facing the hate. It's not just about knowing what's happening; it's about having a concrete plan for what to do when you're the one standing there.
The training falls under the Austin Equity and Inclusion division, which handles the city's racial equity work, immigrant affairs, fair housing, equal employment, and the CROWN Act. They also offer free virtual "Know Your Rights" webinars if you're looking for more on that front.
