Retrospective screenings of the Oscar-winning film Boyhood with a pre-recorded director and cast Q&A.
AFS Cinema is bringing back Boyhood for its 12th anniversary, with screenings on Friday, August 14, Sunday, August 16, and Tuesday, August 18. Each showing is followed by a pre-recorded video Q&A with director Richard Linklater and stars Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette, and Ellar Coltrane. It's a good chance to catch the movie on the big screen and then hear the people who made it talk about it.
If you've never seen it, Boyhood is a bit of a local legend. Linklater wrote and directed it, and he filmed it over 12 years, between 2002 and 2013, with the same cast throughout. He followed the lead actor, Ellar Coltrane, as he actually grew up in front of the camera, playing Mason Evans Jr. from childhood into adulthood. It was originally called The 12 Year Project, and when it finally came out in 2014, it became a cultural phenomenon and picked up an Oscar. The story focuses on four main characters: young Mason, his stressed mother, his sister who's itching to leave home, and his semi-absentee father.
There's a nice Austin connection here, too. Linklater founded the Austin Film Society back in 1985, and AFS Cinema is the society's home, which they run as a hub for the city's creative community. So this retrospective is a local filmmaker's movie coming back to the cinema his own organization operates.

Tickets are $15 for evening shows and $12 for matinees, with matinee pricing available Monday through Friday for any show before 5 PM. AFS members get $4 off, and there are discounts for AISD educators and local high school and college students at the box office with a valid school ID. The screenings are at 4:30 PM on Friday, 2:15 PM on Sunday, and 6:00 PM on Tuesday, all at AFS Cinema, 6406 N I-35 Suite 3100.
