The Blue Moon Jazz Quartet, with Rosie Flores, performing classic jazz standards. $10 cover, 21+ only.
Rosie Flores is bringing her new jazz quartet to the Continental Club Gallery on Tuesday, August 18, at 8 PM. The group goes by Blue Moon Jazz, and the set is built around classic jazz standards. If you can't make that one, she's playing the same room a week later on Tuesday, August 25, also at 8 PM.
For Flores, this is a return to something she's been doing for a long time. She says she started singing standards and covers of the greats back when she lived in Los Angeles in the late 1990s, but it took teaming up with T Jarrod Bonta on piano and Randall Glines on upright bass to get back to singing her favorite jazz classics. The arrangements are unique, and the quartet performs the songs together rather than as a singer backed by a band.
The venue is the Continental Club Gallery, the upstairs room over the club's main floor. It opened in 2008 and holds about 40 people, and it hosts rotating regulars across jazz, singer-songwriters, and jam bands throughout the week. Every quarter it also hosts Tertulia, in the Iberian tradition of mixing poetry, song, and performance. The room is known for the chance that a rock or movie star might show up and sit quietly at the bar.
