Capitol View Arts presents Steve Ray Ladson, an America's Got Talent finalist, with his Blackgrass Brothercana sound, plus Shai Gabriel and Jordan Orionn.
Steve Ray Ladson headlines The Victory Grill on Wednesday, September 16, with Shai Gabriel and Jordan Orionn opening. The night is presented by Capitol View Arts, and Ladson is the main draw hereβhe's a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who reached a national audience as a finalist on America's Got Talent.
He describes his sound as 'Blackgrass Brothercana,' a blend he says is rooted in country, bluegrass, Americana, soul, and Black musical tradition. It's a wide net to cast, and the name itself does a lot of the heavy lifting, so the best way to get a handle on it is to hear it in person. Capitol View Arts director Clifford Gillard puts it as music that 'honors tradition without being confined by it,' and he sees the date as a chance to create something both timely and uniquely Austin.
The venue adds its own weight to the evening. The Victory Grill is one of East Austin's most storied music stages and one of the most important surviving landmarks of the historic Chitlin' Circuit, which welcomed generations of influential Black performers including B.B. King and Tina Turner. Ladson's Blackgrass Brothercana, with its roots in soul and Black musical tradition, fits that lineage.
