Black Coffee plays an open-air set in Austin on Friday, October 30, presented by Stranger Than to kick off Halloween weekend. The venue is listed as Location TBA, though some listings point to 711 Red River Street.
Black Coffee is the stage name of Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, a South African DJ and producer born in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, and raised in Mthatha, Eastern Cape. He studied jazz at Natal Tech, and in 2003 he was chosen as one of two South Africans for the Red Bull Music Academy. In 2005 he founded Soulistic Music, his own 360° corporate structure. His debut album, also called Black Coffee, was made with basic music software and no MIDI controllers. He won Best Urban Dance Album and Best Male Artist at the 2010 South African Music Awards.
Since then, he's been the first African DJ selected by BBC Radio 1 for an Essential Mix, the first South African to win a BET Award for Best International Act: Africa, and the first person of color depicted on a Red Bull commemorative can. His 2015 album Pieces of Me went double platinum. He's known for his house and afro-house style, and this Austin date is an open-air set presented by Stranger Than to start the Halloween weekend.
