A festival of short films exploring urban life and the built environment, organised by AIA Austin and CNU.
The Better Cities Film Festival opens at AFS Cinema on Wednesday, July 22, and it's a short-film festival centered on urban life and the public realm. It's not a one-night thing, either—the screenings run through the end of July and into August, with dates on Wednesday, July 22; Thursday, July 30; Friday, July 31; Saturday, August 1; Sunday, August 2; and Wednesday, August 19. You can catch a single night or spread them out over the weeks.
The festival is all about the built environment and community design. The films it highlights are shorts that look at how we live in cities and how public spaces shape our daily lives. It's the kind of thing that makes you look at your own neighborhood a little differently once you leave the theater.
Two groups are bringing this to Austin: the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Austin Urban Design Committee and the Congress for New Urbanism (CNU) Central Texas Chapter. The Austin Film Society is also presenting. It's a collaboration between architects and urban designers, so the whole thing comes from people who spend their workdays thinking about how cities are put together.
