Bend It Like Beckham

Hyperreal Film Club is screening Bend It Like Beckham on Tuesday, August 4, as part of the Gaysi in the U.K. program presented by Indie Meme. It's a movie that’s earned a reputation as the biggest breakout film starring a South Asian lead in the West, and it’s easy to see why—it’s funny, quotable, and doesn't shy away from the race, gender, and class dynamics at play in Southall.

There's a bit of a story behind how it came together. When director Gurinder Chadha first approached David Beckham about the film, he was hesitant; his rep said he loved the concept of girls playing football but couldn't sign on 'in case the film is rubbish.' Two years later, the movie had surpassed The Scorpion King in the UK charts, catapulted Keira Knightley to fame, and gave Parminder Nagra the chance to play a doctor on TV.

Chadha didn't come to this from nowhere. She'd previously explored British Asian identity in the documentary I'm British But... and sharpened her eye for character-driven drama-comedies with Bhaji on the Beach. Bend It Like Beckham is the one that really hit the mainstream, and seeing it in a room full of people is a different experience than watching it alone on a couch.

As for the venue, Hyperreal Film Club is known for staging movies in unusual, immersive pop-up environments and amplifying local Austin artists, so this isn't just a standard screening. The show runs from 7:30 PM to 11:00 PM at 301 Chicon Street, with doors opening at 7:00 PM.
