Screening of F. W. Murnau's 1922 silent film 'Nosferatu' with a live score by composer Yuval Gotlibovich, performed by Austin Camerata musicians.
Austin Camerata is bringing F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu to AFS Cinema on Friday, October 16, and Saturday, October 17. It's a two-night run, with doors opening at 7:30 PM and the film starting at 8:00 PM both nights. The 1922 silent classic is paired with a live score by composer Yuval Gotlibovich, performed in the room by Austin Camerata musicians Alexander Smith on viola and Cory Blais on cello. It's the North American premiere of Gotlibovich's score, which he describes as ethereal.
That's the whole point of the evening: a century-old silent film with music played live right there in the theater, the way these movies were meant to be seen. Nosferatu is one of the most influential horror films ever made, and this is a good time to catch it—just before Halloween. The score is written for just two instruments, viola and cello, so you'll hear Smith and Blais playing along with the film in real time.
Austin Camerata is led by Artistic Director Daniel Kopp, and they've built their reputation on reimagining the classical music experience through creative concerts, artistic collaborations, and community outreach. They also run Musical Storytime, a concert series that brings storybooks to life with music. This screening fits that same spirit—taking a piece of the classical tradition and putting it in a new, live context.
