Bad Biology

Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar is screening Bad Biology on Wednesday, July 22, a late-career feature from Frank Henenlotter. If you know that name, it's likely from Basket Case and Frankenhooker, the cult classics that put him on the map. This was his first feature since Basket Case 3: The Progeny, and it carries the same kind of low-budget, high-concept energy that defined his early work.

The story centers on Jennifer, a photographer whose unique anatomy proves fatal to her sexual partners. The plot takes a turn when she meets Batz, who happens to have a similarly wacky crotch of his own, and a twisted romance blooms between the two. It's the kind of premise that fits right in with the body-horror and dark humor Henenlotter is known for.

There's a bit of an odd backstory to the production, too. Henenlotter describes himself as an exploitation filmmaker rather than a horror director, and the movie was shot on an ultra-low budget. He got production and writing support from the rapper R.A. the Rugged Man, which explains some of the film's more offbeat edges.
