The Tony Award-winning musical Avenue Q, with puppets and catchy songs, brings its humor and wit to the stage at City Theatre Austin.
Avenue Q opens at City Theatre at Genesis Creative Collective on Friday, August 28, and runs through September 13. It's part of City Theatre Austin's Showtime 2026 summer season, which the company is billing as its 20th Anniversary Summer Season. The production closes out that anniversary year alongside A Raisin in the Sun and A Midsummer Night's Dream. The theatre also noted that its production of Little Shop of Horrors picked up four 2026 Austin Theatre Critics Award nominations.
Avenue Q is the Tony Award-winning musical by Jeff Marx, Jeff Whitty, and Robert Lopez, described as part flesh, part felt and packed with heart. It took home the Tony 'Triple Crown' in 2004, including Best Musical, and follows a group of puppet characters in a New York neighborhood who spend their days hunting for jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life. It's built on sharp wit, catchy songs, and a wicked sense of humor, and it's rated for teens to adults.
